Ok this might start something, but whatever. But I was reading something about a cell phone bill being over 4,000 dollars. The phone belonged to a teenage girl. (her dad hammered it LOL) But this is my problem why do kids get cell phones, I believe once they can pay for it themselves ( under their name their credit) then it is fine. What are these parents thinking? What ever happened to 50cents. Im sorry this my vent post that I just need to know WHY?

Vanessa --- 16 years ago -

http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_12097656 here is the article I was reading...

Malah --- 16 years ago -

i totally agree! when i had a job i got my 1st car.. etc etc. dad taught us, if you pay for it, you value it more. its true!

Vanessa --- 16 years ago -

What is sad is the kids are getting younger and younger, and have electronics for example, xbox 360 you have to pay a monthly membership for that, psp ipods. i too have kids and trust me they will not get things like this unless they by themselves, considering they are only 2 and 3 that wont be a problem for a few years LOL Yall have no idea how this gets me all crazy LOL

May --- 16 years ago -

yes it is very sad cuz they have nothing to actually work for, since it has all, always been given to them..what happens when theres nothing left but a 20 yr old with loads of debt. very very sad.

Christine --- 16 years ago -

I think it depends on the parent. My son is in drivers ed. He is payingfor half of his car. I don't care for cell phones but because the kids go to different schools & have different activities I have had to get each of them one. You see the schools don't allow the kids to use the office phone anymore. So, when there's a bomb threat or they are sick my kids have to call me. I had one of their schools get mad at me when we first movedhere because I didn't have a cell phone & it took them an hour to get ahold of me when they were sick. I am proud of my son because he says he will never get a credit card. He is being taught by our neighbor (a man that employs him) to save 10% of all he earns. Since I am not the one telling him, he really listens.

Vanessa --- 16 years ago -

Well that is good, but he does need to know that having credit is good, especially in these times. It is bad credit he doesn't want. My husband was not taught at all, and when we met he was in college and worked and had more debt than 19 year old should. I am really proud of your son. It is just other parents how do they not know, that this is going on and that new sexting thing. It is just getting a bit out of hand. This is a bit off topic, but I was taught not be rewarded with good behavior, the fact of doing because it was good that is all. It looks like these are what the parents are saying " hey you get an A and I will get you cell phone" NOT " Hey you get an A and you will be better and smarter" LOL

jennifer --- 16 years ago -

I think that it is unthinkable for my child (my oldest is 9) to have a cell phone at her age. A lot of her friends have cell phones, I am floored at the idea of this. What are the parents thinking?? I told my daughter she could a cell phone when she started to babysit at 13, and she had to pay for it with babysitting money, but she has a limit of minutes and it is only 10 a month extra for her. But I did not get a cell phone until I was 15 and I had to pay for it, it was a cricket and I thought it was the coolest thing ever!!

Vanessa --- 16 years ago -

HAHA mine was sprint and I was working at best buy at the time. AHH the good ol days. LOL Im not opposed to pre paid ones, just dont ask me to do it. LOL my parent would give me theirs if I had to go somewhere and if I made any non mom and dad call I would get beat.

jennifer --- 16 years ago -

My kids are not rewarded for good behavior, I expect them to have good beahvior, and they know that. They get rewarded for extra good beahvior...i.e. excellent report cards, extra chores, etc.

Leah --- 16 years ago -

This might peev someone off, but I saw a little 5 year old give the guys at gamestop her number as she used her money to pre-order a game. HER CELL PHONE. She had a nicer cell phone than I do, and I'm 18 YEARS OLD! That and the semi-provocative clothing these kids are wearing... x.x Call me old fashioned but jeez, a mini skirt and tube top for a 7 year old? No wonder kids are getting pregnant at 11 and 12...

Leah --- 16 years ago -

Oh yeah, and it wasn't her parents phone, she had to give her moms cell number too because she wasn't old enough.. Stupid.. x.x

jennifer --- 16 years ago -

I agree with you, I had my first child at 18, I was raised the same way, where I was not allowed to wear those clothes even when I was 15, 16. My oldest is nine and I see the other kids in hefr class and in public her age, and it ticks me off, how can you allow that?? What kind of parent lets their child wear those clothes and wear make up at that age OMG... I agree about no wonder why they are getting pregnant at a young age. Parents are toooo leanient are just odnt care anymore. My daughters get to wear play make up but they have to wash it off if we leave the house, they can wear lipgloss, jewelry. and for their clothes it will be weather appropriate, age appropriate as well. My 9 year old daughter has never once asked to get her those types of clothes... EVER, she has mentioned that she likes a particular style, then I help her make it age appropraite, if a tank top, we add a shirt underneath or something, something that makes it cute and stylish but still makes her look 9.

Vanessa --- 16 years ago -

Yeah, the clothing how do I teach my 2 boys to treat girls later to be women with respect when they dress like that. See I was born in 1984 and I thought things were kinda bad growing up, with people and teens but it is no longer a teen thing anymore, what is wrong with being a kid.

I can say I have been in this position but I just thank god that I called and checked on the bill before it came out. I got my lil sister who just turned 13 a cell phone for christmas last year on our plan. I had to up the minutes the first month because she was on christmas break and ran through the minutes talking to her friends during the day. Now she lives in houston so I dont see her on the phone but my mom was like she texts alot thats all she does. So I checked online a week before our statement and flipped out really bad. Because I knew my husband was going to freak she had already sent and rcvd 10,000 txts and she was only on the 500 non verizon and free in text. So when I saw that I called my mom and it was not a nice conversation, then I called verizon and I thank god I checked that bill because if you call and change your plan due to overages they will back track your bill so that you dont have to pay any overage fees. She got her but saved on the minutes because we were vip customers so I was able to use my free overage charge pass. Anyways i caught it before the bill and I would have gone to houston to whip her if I would have rcvd a bill for that many txt msgs. Plus im glad I called because there is some special I didnt know about if you have a family plan we have 4 lines and unlimited txts to anyone on all the lines and its cheaper than it was for the phones to have the low txt plan.

I was so grossed out when I went school shopping with my little sis she was like 11 I think and we went to limited too and there was thongs.. I was like WHAT......EWWWWW

Christine --- 16 years ago -

I have to agree, we live in a very provactive society. I got the family plan for my 14,13 & 12 year old & they use their phones when they are at soccer practice, swimming practice, football, etc. I don't have problems with my son, but i did take my daughters phne away because of the language her so called "friends" were using. We monitor our kids & they have been good. I know what it's like to try & dress a young lady in todays society. My daughter is an early bloomer (she is bigger than me in the upper torso, if u know what I mean. I am lucky she likes what I like & doesn't give me a hard time. I have to search for clothes that don't "enhance" her good features. her & I have talks about how we want people to notice her pretty face & not her boobs lol I would never allow my kids to dress slutty. I often point out to thempeople that dress that way & ask what message they are portraying to others. They usully say things like "easy" loose, slutty etc.

Ashley --- 16 years ago -

Yea my lil sister looks alot older then her age because shes tall and has legs that dont stop.. lol GRRR Its funny because she doesnt like the short stuff or anything like that and for halloween everyone was doing the hoochie thing and she sent me a pic of what her friends were going to be and what she wanted to be.. She wanted to be a southern belle like the whole old timey get up I laughed so hard because I just wasnt expecting that.... I think that if you grow up in a house with morals and respect, you will follow those boundries. I cant believe the stuff she tells me about girls posing in the locker room taking pics on their phones. Its just scary, im still paranoid she will end up with a pic on her phone the way everything gets fwd now days

Ashley --- 16 years ago -

Dang sorry not meaning to blabble I was just like Yay someones is up.. lol

Danielle --- 16 years ago -

I have a 4 year old son and a 5 year old daughter. This past halloween my husband and i went shopping for their costumes at walmart and we say a generic playboy costume, complete with bunny tail and bowtie. Maybe its just me but when i see something like that in a size 3t i get a little upset. It didn't actually say playboy on it but it looked very similar to the costumes that their cocktail waitresses wear. Who would let their 3 year old year something like that?

Christine --- 16 years ago -

Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but do you remember the little girl 5/6 year old Jon Benet Ramsey. Her mom dressed her up (in my opinion) provacatively & she was murdered. Don't get me wrong, I am not slamming beauty pageants, but the pics I saw of that little girl were too much. There's alot of perverts out there.

Danielle --- 16 years ago -

Thats what scares me so much about having kids. My daughter is in love with hannah montana and i won't let her year a good portion of her clothing line because of the implications. Maybe i'm a prude but i can't see my 5 year old wearing a halter top with sequins on it, or any other design for that matter. It just gets frustrating when you have to modify the only clothes you can afford, like from walmart, because thats all there is. Now i stick to thrift stores and online shopping for the kids.

Danielle --- 16 years ago -

Sorry i meant '' wear'' not year. I'm typing this on my phone lol

Ashley --- 16 years ago -

Im so glad I didnt have a little girl ,Im scared enough with boys getting in trouble or getting a girl pregnant. But im way more motherly to my sister, because of the age difference and she has such an attitude and to watch a girl be hormonal and a teenager is rough. I realized that its better I had no girls because I dont think I could deal with it.. lol

Christine --- 16 years ago -

Oh, Ashley, yes girls can be harder, but they are soo much fun too. When you have one you will see. Yes, there's hormones, but boys have it worse. I have 2 girls. One is 13 & the other is 19 months. I am enjoying sharing my clothes, painting nails, etc. I am also enjoying my little Abby, who i just now learning how to use the potty. She's a riot. I love dressing her & spending time coloring on the sidewalk and chasing bubbles. Don't get me wrong. i love my sons just as much, but there's some things (pretty) that boys don't enjoy. Danielle, I had to do the same thing, but Burkes in the mall carries some decent clothes for young ladies for cheap!! Stick wih it about the whole Hannah Montana thing cause shes a wild one!

Ashley --- 16 years ago -

Yea thats the only thing I feel I will miss out on, my boys are 3 and 2 so they are mommies boys but once they get older I know they will want daddy because daddy plays sports and etc with them. No more kids for me, my youngest messed me up bad and still no one knows whats wrong with me.. lol Well we color on the sidewalk and chase bubbles.. lol My youngest found some of my make up and brought it to daddy so they had more then enough fun putting black eyes on themselves last night... lol

i have pretty strict rules for my girls. all dresses or skirts must be at least to the knees and have shorts under. i sometimes have to buy them big and alter the waist because even the granimals ones are getting shorter. on the rare occasion they get to wear spaghetti straps or halters, they have to be snug fitting along the neck line and arm openings (so nothing shows when they bend over) im not so picky with my baby, but my 3 year old always has to follow these rules. also, my kids are not getting cell phones. if they get older and have to go somewhere without me, they can borrow mine for emergency use only. i know a lady who made her 5 year old wear a bra and shave her legs. i felt so bad for the girl, her childhood was cut short in my opinion.

Ashley --- 16 years ago -

oh my god thats horrible, shaving at 5.. See I could never be a pagent mom like that. I had nicolas in a gymnastics class, tryin to find something he could use his energy for until he turns 4 and can go into karate. I brought him to one class and he was the only boy and the moms were all griping at thier kids to watch the teacher and do it like this or that. I was like jeesh they are 2 let them be. So I just had my hubby take him to class which I think made it better for everyone because then there was a make to break up all the estoagen.. lol

Vanessa --- 16 years ago -

It is just good to know I am not the only one who has issues with all of this today, NOW here's the kicker there is almost nothing we can do about it. LOL I hate it, yo try and talk and these kids wont listen they give you additude and really make you just want to beat the poop out of them. LOL Ok here is another one cussing, swearing or whatever you call it. Has anyone seen that movie ROLEMODELS funny money and I loved it there is this lil boy who cusses worse than I do. I mean this is not the first time I have seen a kids cuss and not just that the talking back and lack for respect kids give. Their thoughts are " You need to show me respect and I will show you respect" this is rediclous... and some parents tolerate it you should see this video on youtube of a boy slapping his mom. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pEFhzoXnuc I too have 2boys and it that ever and I mean EVER i would take them down...... I dont care if they 6 foot 200 lbs....

★Elizabeth★ --- 16 years ago -

i know. my kids will never hit me. but my 3 year old already calls adults sir and maam. i dont put up with any attitude from her. everyone says im too strict with her, but if she doesnt learn rules and respect now she never will.
