we got our orders today to holloman. right now we are stationed in ramstein, germany. i am german, hubby is american , both 25 years old and we have a 10 months old baby girl. holloman was not on our dream-sheet but what can you do. i was wondering if i can get some basic information about the base, if they do a lot for families, how the area is etc. this will be my first move and i am super nervous thank you
Maren- Holloman is not that bad of a base. It is like everywhere else- it is what you make of it.
My husband and I have been stationed here for 4 1/2 years. I am 28, hubby is 29, we have two daughters, 2 1/2 and 1 and one child on the way (due in April).
The area surrounding base is very small. There is not alot to do in the immediate area.........but there is great shopping 45 minutes from us in Las Cruces. Also, we have the mountains and mountain towns which are fun to visit about 40 minutes from us.
It seems to be hard to meet people here (my experience) but again, it is all what you make of it and how much you get out and about to do things.
I'm not sure if you have any specific questions, but we have been here a while, so I will try to help you as much as I can. Feel free to ask away!
thats great thank you so much and congrats on the baby!! i mean i know it will be a weather change for me since i grew up in germany and i am used to snow and the cold but i also love hot summer weather, hubby is from cali so he is kinda used to it. i looked up online whats around base and found the zoo, park, museum etc. what food places are around?? and very important for me:is there a starbucks lol?!?! how is the housing there?do u live on or off base?
ya im afraid of not meeting new ppl, i am a very "open person" i always love to meet new people.
Hey Maren! Welcome to Holloman, my hubby and i have three children - two 5 year olds and a 14month old. We are both 25. We actually are waiting for our orders out but currently we live on base and both love it. I Love Love Love my house! We have lived off base and on base and i really enjoy being on base, i dont think i would want to live in town again if given the choice. There is so many child friendly activities especially in the summer and they are free! Like Christy said it is what you make it. I personally think it is easy to make friends here, alot of people are open like yourself and friendly. Good luck with your move, i know my family and i will miss it here :)
there is a wonderful spa in town called Shimmer spa, they do massages, facials, waxing. They also have a branch out at the base. I've been to Cali nails on 10th for my pedicures, and they did a great job.
No starbucks but theres a book store hastings that has great coffee!! an 6pm to 8pm they have buy one drink get the secound for free!!! The coffee shop on base is only open mon thru fri until 1pm or 2pm omthing like that the base is kind of smal but easy to get around! Most everyone on base and even in town are great! my husband andI live in town an our neighbors have become like amily too us we evenspend thanksgiving with them!
