Im a military spouse and we have been here since last June and I haven't been able to find a job. I have tried just about everywhere I can think of and any suggestions others have given me. Im a photographer and Im there is no way Im going to find a "photographer" job here, so I started my home based business. It isn't a lot of money to be honest, but some is better than none. I have resorted to applying to Kmart, Lowes, Home Depot ... I was called from Home Depot, but I haven't heard back from them ...
The BX is still hiring I think, it's only 7.5 an hour, but better than nothing lol even if it only covers the cost of daycare and maybe one bill haha. Plus I live on base (do you?) so it's much more convenient as far as location is concerned.
Do you do family pictures? The photographer I found and like here is PCSing already so I need to find a new one!
Ewwww ... the BX ...lol. Ive worked for AAFES before and although I left on good terms, I will never work for them again. I have worked with them on two different bases and the experience was all the same. Not to discourage you from working there, but that was just my experience. Anyway, I do family pictures and other things ... Im sending you a personal message.
Isn't it horrible??? Its a good thing we aren't too far in debt and aren't dying for money. Just so you know, Lowes.com has job listings and I have applied for the cashier one ... see how it goes ... there are other positions available as well.
I tried Nafjobs.org as well ... I applied for several jobs and when I called to see what the status was of my application, I was told (can't remember her name) that the "openings" were continuously open and the only jobs they are actually hiring for are the Hot Jobs. So every time I ck the site, I only check the "Hot Jobs" and there are either none available or the ones that are available are for positions Im not qualified for. Like now the only hot job is Automotive mechanic. I can barely put in gas lol. But yes, it is worth a shot.
You're right Rey in that the HOT JOBS are the ones that are open, but like for my office several times I've not even announced a job because I have several applications who applied while it wasn't open. Just worth a shot since most jobs in FSS have turn over due to military moves.
I too have applied to SEVERAL jobs on nafjobs.org 4-5 months ago and I update/check the status regularly with not a single call. The CDC does pay the best for an entry level job, but I was told about 4 months ago that there were over 60 people applied and waiting in front of me! I'm not going to hold my breath lol so for now a job at the BX is fine by me! It's not ideal, but it is convenient and better than wasting gas driving into town to get paid the same minimum wage.
Now if I could just get my daughter into the CDC I'd be all set lol
That's what they told me :/ I kind of believe it since I've been waiting so many months (oh and I have experience working at the CDC at Kadena). And with the number of people at this small base it makes sense.
No, honestly I don't want a bunch of children running around my house, I know that sounds insensitive, but I have a tough time maintaining a clean home with just my one 2 year old! And I want her to go to a CDC as opposed to FCC so she can interact with many children her age to socialize better and possibly learn a few things as well.
Try applying at the many banks in town. Most are always hiring and they usually pay above minimum wage. I got hired at the first one I applied too. I know that the one I work at is probably looking for someone now. For most places, you just go onto the companys website and click on the careers link to apply. :)
It took me about 6 months to find a job and I got a job in town at a telecommunications company. This is the best job searching website that I have found. Also the City of Alamogordo seems to have a lot of jobs, you just have to keep an eye out for them. I had a hard time even getting interviews on base being only a civilian, even when I claimed spousal preference. The family rediness center has lots of good seminars on job searching and resume updating and they send out emails to job seekers with potential jobs.
